Media relations is an aspect of public relations (PR) that looks at companies liasing with the media in order to gain coverage and promote products and service. A public relations officer, for example, would work closely with clients to deliver key brand messages to pre-picked targeted consumer audiences. Someone starting out in media relations can expect a salary of £16-18k depending on location, but in senior management positions that can increase to salaries in the region of £40-100k. It is a very competitive sector, so initial salary expectations are small, but the payoff after years of experience can be substantial. Those entering into media relations as a career may already have a degree in media studies, English, marketing or PR; however, industry experience and specific personal qualities matter more. Those in media relations are expected to be flexible in their working schedule and able to manage relationships professional and efficiently.
